The S Word

I mentioned in my last post that I'm having knee surgery. Many of you have sent warm, kind and concerned thoughts which are so much appreciated. I thought I'd take a second and give you the 411. "That means information, people." (Any Monk fans in the house?)

At the end of January, I slipped and fell on a rubber mat that was turned upside down. Luckily, this happened at work. This means I don't have to pay for anything and I'll ultimately get reimbursed for my time. It also means this whole process has been dragged out 17 times longer than if I had to pay for this. All I'll say about that is...if you have to get hurt at work, don't do it in North Carolina.

It turns out that when I fell I tore my medial meniscus. I've had ice, compression, heat, NSAIDS, a cortisone injection, yoga, physical therapy, x-rays, an MRI and a glucosamine/condrointon supplement (when I can remember to take it). You name it, I've tried it. No dice. Nothing has worked. I'm still in a lot of pain, can't walk far, biking and running are out of the question, and I'm still wearing a knee brace. Without the brace, I feel things moving in ways most unnatural.

At my last doctor's appointment, it was decided that surgery was the next step. It will be arthroscopic surgery and should take about 20 minutes or so. They will go in and look around, take pictures and cut out the torn piece of cartilage. I'll be laid up for a few days and on crutches for a few more. They expect me to be as good as new in 4-5 months. Sadly, my hopes of a robotic knee transplant have been crushed. Perhaps next time. I do however get souvenir photos of the inside of my knee, which is a nice touch. I wonder if they do t-shirts too? "I went to Blue Ridge Surgical Center and all I got was this lousy t-shirt."

The surgery is scheduled for May 7. My mom will come stay for a few days. It will then be up to Elvis to care for me. I have three weeks to teach him how to open the fridge and turn on the oven. If that fails, I am certain a few friends will come over to feed me if absolutely necessary.

I appreciate the well wishes. I assure you I will be fine. My 89 year old grandmother always says, "you just don't die as easily as you think you do." In the past 9 years, she's had breast cancer and mastectomy, a broken hip and replacement, an exploding gall bladder, and recently 5 staples in the back of her noggin from a fall. She's never been in the hospital for more than 3 weeks. So, I think she'd know.

So good, I had to post it twice.

I work with a girl, T., she about 28 or 29. As a coworker, she's merely okay, but as a person, she is a very sweet, soft spoken girl. She has a son, J., who is about 10 or 11. If I have extra goodies, I'll give them to her to pass on to J. because I know he'll eat them. I also do it because T. doesn't cook or bake and really, every kid needs a freshly baked cookie every now and again. I've also passed on goodies that neither she nor he have tried before and have yet to find something that they don't like. I think the last thing I shared with them was red velvet cupcakes. I've only met J. once or twice in the past. He's a super cute, super sweet kid. T is doing an amazing job as a single mother and I have no doubt that J will turn into a fine man someday.

Two mornings ago, T comes up to me and tells me that her son has just learned how to make those slice and bake Toll House cookies and he's going to make some for me. Yesterday, she tells me that J wants me to know that he didn't make the cookies the night before because he had to watch the wrestling draft and he hoped I would understand. I told her to tell him I would have done the same thing. This morning when I got to work, T hands me a little plastic baggie with 4 chocolate chip cookies. I almost cried. Seriously. He made me cookies because I am always sending things home for him.

I was late this morning because I had a doctor's appointment. I found out that I have to have knee surgery in a week or two. Getting cookies that J baked especially for me made my day!

This post has no title.

I had to drive to work three times this week. I hated every minute of it.

On Wednesday, I had a MRI at 7:30 in the morning. It was supposed to be for my knee, and eventually was, however getting to that point was difficult. Since it's a work injury, So And So has to call Someone Else who has to call me to set up an appointment for The Third Guy, but only after What's Her Name sends over the paperwork and approval for whatever I need. As you can imagine, there was a breakdown in communication. Someone Else called me to set up an appointment to do an MRI of my shoulder. Twice. My shoulder is just fine, thank you very much. My knee is not. The MRI turned out to be not such a big deal, thankfully. They set up the appointment for the morning after they called to set up the appointment. As I was doing some reading on their website, sometimes the patient needs an IV to inject some stuff that makes things show up better. I'm not really sure what this stuff is. I have a pretty strong needle phobia, and allergies to latex, and several drugs. I had no one to ask questions about what would happen, etc, so needless to say the last thing on my mind was being stuffed into a tube. As it turns out, the place I went to had an MRI machine that was like a donut with a table. I went in feet first, no IV, and got to listen to Foghat. That machine was really freakin' noisy. It all worked out well. May I never have to do that again.

On Thursday, I had to go to the DMV. There is a special place in Hell reserved for all those who work at the DMV. That's all I'll say about that.

This morning, I had my first physical therapy appointment. I'll go twice weekly, which means I'll have to drive to work on those days. Dammit. PT was good. I'm in the capable hands of Stephanie. As she was showing me some of the exercises I have to do, she asked me to roll over onto my other side to compare the flexibility in both knees. As I am rolling over, I nearly fell off the table. She had to catch me. I am so cool. Seriously, like ballerina graceful.

I hate to drive. I really hate to drive. A lot.

Megan and Irony have ended their relationship.

I've been around. I swear. It's just been a tough week.

Last Wednesday, I fell as I was leaving work. I slipped outside and landed on my left knee. Hard. It still hurts a lot. I filed a worker's comp claim Thursday morning and went to the urgent care Thursday afternoon. It still hurts a lot. When I went back to the UC for a follow up, the doctor treated me like I'm totally faking. She gave me 800mg of ibuprofin to take every three hours. Since I value my liver and kidneys, I've opted to deal with the pain and only take one of those a day. I go to an orthopedic clinic on Friday. The irony is it was my turn to handle worker's comp. Sigh.

On Friday, I was told I'm losing my job on May 1st. Yes, I am noting the irony of losing my job on May Day. I had another conversation about this yesterday, which did not go so well. I don't feel like going into it here, but I'm pretty angry about the situation.

On Saturday, I took His Highness to the vet. He had earmites and worms. Ah, the joys of adopting a shelter kitty. We got treatment for both in the vet's office. He is doing well. He weighs in at a whopping 4.5 pounds. I was advised that my flyweight prize fighter is too skinny. Partly because he's so damn active, partly because he's still growing, and maybe the worm issue might play a part too. He's a good eater. He ate a black bean tonight, just one. We're not worried right now that he's too skinny.

Alright, I'm tired. The dishes aren't going to wash themselves. I'll be back soon. Love to you all.

Funny, they didn't mention this on Tuesday.

Here's a depressing article on the rapid demise of my company.

Wednesday, December 17, 2008

I guess you're wondering why I called this meeting today.

The HR department had a meeting at work on Monday to discuss the topic of the companywide meeting that was held on Tuesday. This is why it's good to be in HR...you find out everything the day before. The topic of the meetings happened to be the significant downsizing of our company as the result of closing a line of business. This time it impacts what we call "Shared Services." This is what you might call IT. And Finance. And HR. And Accounts Payable. And Accounts Receivable. And and and and. You get my point. The line of business closes at the end of March. Another reason it's good to be a part of HR? Someone has to lay off all the people, turn off the lights and lock the doors. This means I would expect to lose my job around mid-April. We were notified that we'll know where we stand by the end of January. I fully expect to be told in January I'm losing my job.

Maybe I'm in shock, maybe I was expecting this, maybe I don't care, but to tell you the truth what upsets me the most right now is that I will not be able to adopt PJ and Snoopy right now. If they were younger, I'd do it. The fact that they are almost 10 worries me about potential health problems. The cancer ordeal with Truman cost me almost $3,000. If I can't guarantee my current salary, it worries me. I have to remind myself that they are in a foster home and thus good hands.

I have plans. I have long term plans and I have short term plans. Some of these plans I am not yet ready to tell you about. Some of these plans are still in the works. Overall, I am not that worried. I can take care of myself. Would I like to have more money in savings? Oh yes, although I would probably say that even if I had oodles of cash in savings. My rent and bills are minimal. There are tons of restaurants around, so if I have to wait tables, I can. I mean, getting mad isn't going to give back to my company the $35 mil we lost and the $9 mil we were supposed to have made this year. (Seriously. I can't wrap my mind around that.)

In short, I'm cool, baby. I'm cool.

Today's Forecast: Hot with a 10% chance of being able to sit down for five minutes.

I had to work today. This would annoy me to no end if I did not get in a nice seven mile bike ride. Sadly, on the way to work, I was bitch-slapped by a sycamore tree. This did not make me happy. I swear it stuck a branch out just as I was riding by.

My friend, B Dalton Book Idiot, was waiting in front of the Chargrill this morning. He was leaning back on the bench, with his hands down the front of his pants. He was moving his mouth like he was chewing. That takes creepy to a whole new level.

I had to go into to work to rearrange files. Oh joy. It was another scorcher today, so I was a sweaty mess by the time I got to the office. (Mental note to self: Next time I ride to work take a towel and comb.) Four and a half hours of manual labor later, I was still a sweaty mess. Just in time for my ride home, the mercury hit 95. And I'm still gross. An hour after I got home I was en route to L's new house to help her paint. Thankfully the Player's Retreat was gracious enough to serve us beer and a veggie burger for dinner. After dinner we went back for coat two in the living room. My day finished twelve hours after it started. I am exhausted. Completely and totally exhausted. Today was a pretty good day.

Today is my mom's 62nd birthday. The big news in their house? They bought a Wii. They also have an appointment with Social Security. Parents. What are ya gonna do?

Happy weekend!

1. This morning I saw a guy at the Transfer Center that looked like the actor who played Clarence in It's a Wonderful Life. (I was going to add a link to IMDb, but my ISP is telling me they can't find the website! The world's gone mad!)

2. I don't understand why relationships have to be so complicated. This weekend should be...weird to say the least.

3. It was only 97 degrees out today. It was so hot it hurt.

4. Today was Tamale Friday at work. Our cleaning lady, N, is from Mexico. She and her sister make tamales on Friday morning and sell them in the office for $1 a piece. They make the traditional red and green chicken tamales, which are good. Last time they had refried bean tamales, which were sublime. Today they made me special black bean tamales. Oh my oh my, were they good. She didn't mention to me that there were big pieces of jalapenos in them. The first one didn't have a jalapeno in it, and it was yummy. The second one had a half of a jalapeno in it. Now, I like spicy food, so I'm okay with this. I just like to be warned before I eat spicy food. They were still really good. Later N told me the ones with the jalapenos were meant for the Indian girl in payroll who puts jalapenos on all of her food. N also surprised me with a cheese tamale, free of charge. It ws good but the bean ones were better.

5. Amy Number One got her hair did. She has quite a bit of grey. I'd guess she's in her early 40s. She gets it colored dark, black maybe and cut into a short bob. It's really cute, actually. And strangely enough, the same cut I'm going for with my hair.

6. Cast Away is on TNT right now. I love that movie. I love Tom Hanks.

7. I want to learn Russian so I can read Dostoyevsky in his native language.

8. Funquita, my afternoon 105 driver, was painting her nails while she was driving earlier this week. I let her supervisor know. She let me know by almost driving off without me yesterday. I was next to the bus, by the doors, and she drove off. Then she drove past my stop when we got to Raleigh. Nice, huh? She defines ghetto.

9. Save a couple quick errands tomorrow, I doubt I will be leaving the house all weekend. Except for a cook out on Sunday night. Otherwise, I'll be hanging out in the refrigerator all weekend.

Bear left. Right frog.

Today was an emotional rollercoaster. This weekend and all week long, we were very worried about a friend. We've been unable to locate him. This morning, it weighed heavily on my mind.

Around 10:30 this morning, Kim from Facilities comes up to me and says she needs to talk to me about something. Our DHL driver was asking her about me. I've never seen him, but he apparently thinks I'm the bees knees. Alright, that made me giggle. It's been a loooong time since I was pursued. Historically, I date assholes. She told me he was a really nice guy and I should stop by around 4:30 when he comes to pick up our packages.

Around three, we had a not so quick departmental meeting. We've had two temps in our office to get us through Christmas, Easter and Theme Park seasons. Tameka just started a month or two ago. I heart Tameka. She's smart, funny and organized. She works hard and I like that. We also have Clarissa. She started before Thanksgiving. She is lazy, dim-witted, unorganized and completely unprofessional. She wears so much perfume that you can smell it...literally...twenty feet away. One day Clarissa was being, well, Clarissa. Tameka walks into my office and says, "how do you just not go off on her on a regular basis?" Nuff said. We had to let go of one temp because we just don't need both of them. Three guesses who we kept. Fuck. I just can't believe it. In the middle of our meeting, Clarissa declares, "I gots to go," and gets up to leave. My boss stopped her. Clearly, she was the better choice.

The day got infinitely better at 4:30. I went down to the mail room. Kim tells me to quickly go down the hallway, turn around and come back because DHL Boy will be coming in the door at the end of the hall. This was so sixth grade, but so worth it. DHL Boy is hot. Shaved head. Good. Beard. Good. Hispanic. Good. Physically speaking, which is about all I have to go on at the moment, he's spot on. As I was walking down the hall trying to look as non-chalant as possible, he says hello to me. "Hi, how's it going," says I. He goes into Kim's office, they talk business, he walks out. I ran in and we giggled. She then asks me if I want his phone number. I happened to have a Moo card on me, and she passed it on. I left work a few minutes later and he drove past the bus stop and waived. About three minutes later, he called. To tell me that I looked nice today and to see if it was okay if he called me later tonight. We just talked a few minutes ago. I have high hopes for DHL Boy.

The best part of my day is that my friend has been located, safe and sound. A little worse for the wear, but okay.

I also made a small change here at Chez Megonthebus. I changed my tags. I realized that there are times when it's been weeks between posts about my constantly rotating cast of characters, so the tags relate to the characters I post about.

And finally, I'm watching The Muppet Movie. Mel Brooks just got his ass kicked by Miss Piggy. I love that scene.

Smokin' and drinkin' on a Tuesday night

I left work a few minutes early today. I was able to take an earlier bus home. On this particular bus, there is a gaggle of women who sit up front and socialize. At least one, if not more, is guaranteed to be wearing way too much of a flowery perfume. Since strong smells, particularly perfumes, set off migraines for me, I sit in the back. I found an empty seat in front of these two construction worker looking dudes. When I sat down, they were comparing cell phones, ringtones and cost of said phones. Within two minutes, it became very obvious that the guy behind me was wasted. He smelled like the cologne of...well, Springfield, Mass? It was a mixture of BO, stale Kool cigarettes and Colt 45. I thought I was going to gag. About five minutes into the trip home and after changing seats four times, his friend passed out. My man, however, was still behind me. He announced at one point that he had to open the window because he needed some air. My first thought was naturally that he was going to puke. This did not happen. He announced later that he had to get off the bus because he had to pee. He then bitched about having to sit in traffic. He answered the phone with a loud, resounding, "mothah fuckaaaaaaaaaah!" He announced as I was getting off the bus that he had to go because he was about to pee on the bus. In short, he's a real winner. What baffles me is that there is literally no place around the transfer center to drink. Was he brown baggin' it on the platform?

Before I forget...happy tax day everyone. Don't forget to file today to get your economic stimulus something or other. Since I have been procrastinating on ponying up the $131 I owe the feds, I decided to stop by Snoopy's for some dinner. I walked up to the window and the really sweet manager guy says to me, "Well hey there darlin'. I haven't seen you in a few days." I think I need to lay off the Snoopy's. In my defense, the chicken salad sandwiches are that good! The fries are always hot and the tea is nice and sweet. The people who work there are super friendly and fast. Oh, and it's two blocks from my apartment. It doesn't get any better!

I had my EFO (employee feedback opportunity) today. I got a very good review from my boss. And a raise! Yay me!

Off to begrudgingly finish my taxes.
